Colophony (Colophonium tot.) is a pine resin from Portugal. Pine is believed to be strengthening and cleansing and has long been held sacred in many cultures. Pine resin has a mild citrus-like, green, balsamic fragrance. Native Americans used pine in their incense mixtures and chewed it to treat throat infections. They also used the resin to heal wounds and bruises. In the ancient book, Natural Science, Hildegard von Bingen wrote of pine, "The pine tree is more warm than cold and contains energies and powers. The tree is a symbol for strength." Celtic and German ancestors believed the pine tree to be a source of protection from negative energies. Pine was burned in sick rooms to strengthen the healing process. According to older herb books, pine strengthens the nerves and gives energy, courage, and emotional strength. To some Christians, the pine tree is a symbol of light and life.

    Setting things straight

I originally ordered this resin because of a negative review someone had posted and I’m so glad I did. Right now, I’m sitting with it on my incense heater, blended with German cedar resin, and it's a lovely experience.

On its own, the Colophony Resin (a pine resin traditionally used for varnishes and incense) offers a humble, mellow aroma... soft, slightly sweet, and syrupy. It actually reminds me a bit of Burgundy pitch. I love it for what it is: gentle and grounding.

Because I have a cold today, I decided to blend it with German Cedar Resin, which is known for its clarifying and respiratory-supportive qualities. The two together produce something unexpectedly beautiful. The warm, woodsy sharpness of the cedar pairs beautifully with the syrupy colophony... creating an effect that reminds me of Boswellia neglecta (Honey Frankincense)—one of my all-time favorites.

Such a soothing experience. I'm definitely giving this 5 stars!

These resins burn too quickly. The ones I ordered were very thin. It would be better if they were thicker.
