Palo Santo is a tree native to Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula south to Peru and Venezuela including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador, and on the Galapagos islands. The tree belongs to the same family (Burseraceae) as frankincense and myrrh.
Palo Santo is now a protected resource, as its precious oil was harvested through deforestation for several decades. There has been a strong movement for replanting and replenishing this beloved wood that has been used in many South American cultures, such as the Incas, for centuries.
