Sweet Palo Santo wood chunks (Bursera graveolens) from Peru are also known as "Holy Wood". The chunks provide a warm welcoming atmosphere! Palo Santo is a tree native to Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, south to Peru and Venezuela, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador and on the Galapagos islands. The tree belongs to the same family (Burseraceae) as frankincense and myrrh. Palo Santo chunks can be burned alone as it will self-extinguish, filling the space with warm, sweet smoke. The wood can also be ground and powdered and used in small amounts as an ingredient in incense mixtures.
Palo Santo is now a protected resource, as its precious oil was harvested through deforestation for several decades. There has been a strong movement for replanting and replenishing this beloved wood that has been used in many South American cultures, such as the Incas, for centuries. We obtain our Palo Santo from trusted and ethical vendors who only harvest from naturally fallen trees.
