Orris Root (Racine d'Iris) from France was once used in Western medicine, but now is primarily used in the incense and perfume industry as a base note and fixative. Believe it or not, it is also still used as an ingredient in many brands of gin, most notably in Bombay Sapphire. The scent of the root is more like violets then iris and is often included as one of the many ingredients of Ras el hanout, a blend of herbs and spices used across the Middle East and North Africa.
