Baked Earth Attar is from Uttar Pradesh, India where it is the hydro-distilled baked earth of Kannuj, India in pure sandalwood oil. Baked Earth Attar is a rare treat. The aroma is of the monsoon rains, givers of life and sustenance, and the fragrance of the earth. This attar has a deep, rich and mysterious smell that reminds us of the time when the monsoon rains first connected with the rich soil of India. Warm and calming, it provokes a sense of comfort, and frees the heart from fear and worry.

It is loved by the women of northern India and applied to the body in the months prior to childbirth, as it relaxes them. It is also believed to help the soul of the unborn child to adjust to life in this world.

The traditional attars of India are rarely found in their pure form today. An attar is created by a certain proportion of flowers or other aromatic plants. In this case, the baked earth of Kannuj. After being placed into a copper vessel containing water and sealed, the aromatic vapors produced from a wood or cow dung fire, rises through bamboo pipes and passes into another copper vessel containing sandalwood oil which sits below the larger distilling one. The vapors condense and after distillation, the water and oil separate, allowing most of the aromatic molecules to become absorbed into the sandalwood oil. The process is repeated for a minimum of 15 days until the sandalwood becomes totally saturated with the perfume of that particular essence.
